The 21st Lleida Latin-American Film Festival ended yesterday, and Mexico took home some top awards this past week for both Cantinflas and Güeros. The Lleida Latin-American Film Festival (Mostra de Cinema Llatinoamericà de Lleida) takes place annually in Lleida, Spain and features some of the best Latin American films from the past year. Sebastian del Amo won the Social Sciences Award “La Caixa” for Best Director for Cantinflas.
Oscar Jaenada, deservedly took home the Best Actor award for his portrayal of the title character of the same film. Read our review of Cantinflas here.
Oscar Jaenada is currently slated to appear at Mexico’s Ariel awards for his nomination for Best Actor in Cantinflas, which premieres live on May 27, 2015. While his co-star, Ilse Salas is nominated Best Actress, but for her role in Güeros.
The Mexican film Güeros, directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios, won Best Feature Length Picture of the Film Festival. Güeros is filmed in a raw black and white, set in Mexico City and was just recently acquired by New York-based distributor Kino Lorber. Güeros will be showing in select U.S. cities, after opening at this summer’s New York’s Film Forum on May 20. But if you live in Houston, you can catch Güeros at the Museum of Fine Arts film event, Latin Wave 10 on May 3, 2015.
Güeros is also nominated for Best Feature Length Picture at the Ariel Awards in Mexico, which will air on May 27, 2015. Be sure to check back for more news as we near the awards.
